It was with much sadness that we had to say goodbye to our senior stallion Derwen Railway Express at the beginning of March 2010. As he entered his 32nd year, his health had started to falter and hard as the decision was, we knew that the time had come. His legacy at our stud and others will never be forgotten. With four daughters retained at the stud, as well as a number of granddaughters, we will be forever grateful to have had the opportunity to stand such an influential sire at our stud. A prolific sire, with many of his progeny also continuing to prove themselves well into their 20’s, we are sure that he will continue to stamp his stock via his offspring for many more generations to come.

The stud was founded in 1980 initially with the Ffynonwen Prefix. The first Welsh Cob we bred was Ffynonwen Alexis who was born in 1984. She was top priced animal at The Spring Sale in 1989 and went on later to win the Novice Mare Class at the Royal Welsh Show.
The Prefix was changed to Abergavenny in 1986 for geographic reasons. The stud has now grown in size, we currently have three Welsh Cob Stallions at public stud. We also keep around twenty mares which have all been carefully picked as part of a strict breeding plan.
The stud has produced many horses to go on to do very well under saddle, including Abergavenny J.R and Abergavenny Nobility and more recently Abergavenny Tywysog and Abergavenny Tlws.
As the stud has grown so has the children's interest, with Jonathan taking over from Dad (John) in the in hand classes for the Section D as well as showing his own Section Cs to great success. Daughter Rhiannon is also actively involved in the stud and has had great success with her gelding, Putwell Comet Bach, (now sold) with which she competed in hand.

But it is Mum, Bev, who can claim the oldest family connection with the welsh cob; the photo to the right shows her grandfather Lloyd Prosser (on the far left) with the stallion Brilley Errand Boy and again below, with another stallion, Brilley Watchman.
